A Kuryakyn Guide to Picking the Right Passenger Pegs

Since we first introduced them in the late ’90s, our adjustable passenger pegs have been the comfort saviors of choice for those who like to ride long distances. Back in the day, when these eventual best-sellers made their way onto bikes, our thinking was to provide motorcycle passengers with a highway cruise peg like riders have, enabling them to stretch out, relax and have multiple riding positions.

In recent years — and especially this year — we here at Kuryakyn have come out with options for almost every make and model cruiser out there with our new retractable passenger pegs. And with so many options from which to choose, finding the right peg for your ride can leave you scratching your head in confusion.  So how do you select the right passenger peg to fit your bike? Keep reading.

To simplify the task of picking the correct passenger pegs, the first thing we need to do is identify the bike and then identify the passenger foot peg equipment on that bike. In the brief guide below, we list the most common bikes — and if you don’t see your bike listed or have questions as to what you need, our techs are available weekdays over the phone or by e-mail to help you out.

Note that Kuryakyn parts are designed around a stock bike. When installing retractable passenger pegs it’s important to ensure proper clearance. That’s especially true on 2008 and earlier HD Touring models equipped with aftermarket exhaust systems as well as bikes equipped with aftermarket saddlebags or anything that could interfere with the operation of the pegs. You’ll find that most exhausts clear just fine, including Vance & Hines and Kuryakyn head pipes. But Reinhart head pipes will require the use of the Kuryakyn extended board mount on the left side.

Our adjustable passenger pegs are exclusively made for Harley-Davidson Touring models from 1993 on up. These pegs feature two riding positions as well as the ability to fold out of the way when not in use. This is accomplished by a simple pin-type design that locks the peg in and out of position by simply sliding a lever. Each kit comes with all necessary equipment for installation and each is designed specifically for the various types of floorboard mounts that come standard on most touring models.

Retractable Passenger Pegs for Harley-Davidson

The retractable passenger pegs are new for this year and open up a whole new level of fitment options as well as customization once installed. We call these pegs “retractable” and not “adjustable” because they feature a foolproof cam design that simply has a riding and stored position without any additional moving parts. Customization is also very easy and we have a variety of pegs available in various sizes and styles. Another great feature is the ability to change to floorboards. It’s so simple that anyone with a set of hex wrenches can install them.

An important thing to note when installing retractable passenger pegs on your bike is to insure that the peg mount coming from the frame cannot rotate when pressure is applied. If it can rotate, we do not recommend installing these pegs. An easy way to tell if the mount will work is to look at how it is fastened to the frame. If it bolts to the frame using multiple contact points or if it’s welded, then chances are it will work. If you not sure, please give our techs a call before ordering. They’re knowledgeable and experienced, plus they’ve got the resources to help you make the right decision.
